Geng Shuwei:
As a landscape painter, who has visited numerous mountains and rivers, seen lots of natural creatures in the mountains, and sucked the pure air of the nature, I enjoy great happiness by creating Chinese ink and colour painting style of pine-and-snow landscapes and Huangshan Mountain pine-and-snow landscapes. In the seemingly limited time and space, the unlimited possibility can be created with vigorous vitality in the longitude and latitude displayed on paper. I have studied painting for decades since I was a student, and now I have come to the age to cherish time. Every minute and every second that I spent make me think about the past of my research and creation of such ink painting style.
I have been innovating and exploring the ways of artistic expression of Chinese painting style of pine-and-snow landscapes and Huangshan Mountain pine-and-snow landscapes. First, I have studied the excellent images in the schema style of traditional painting and the images that came with the artists’ feeling. Second, I have focused the cognition of painting concept on the image integrity and theme. The pattern of Chinese pine-and-snow landscape painting and Chinese Huangshan Mountain pine-and-snow landscape painting serves to interpret the concept of ‘theme’ intention and symbolic meaning. In my creation of ink and colour painting style of Chinese pine-and-snow landscapes and Huangshan Mountain pine-and-snow landscapes, I have interpreted the intended symbolic meaning of the combination of pines and mountain peaks. Only when I have the inspiration and strong desire for creation, can I express honestly with my characteristic style of ink and colour painting.
In the natural environment, I sincerely conceive and express the ‘connotation and temperament of the natural pines and the peaks’ with artistic interest to them. Meanwhile, I keep on thinking and reviewing my own intention and responsibility for the present and the future in a way of ‘external observation and internal review’. With my works of ‘Chinese pine-and-snow landscape painting’, I have formed my own symbolic approach, and have improved myself constantly for more than twenty years.
