Hundred + Butterfly

Punning Details

– Artists may repeat a particular visual element many times to convey the numeral ‘bai 百 hundred’.

– ‘Dié 蝶’ in ‘ dié 蝴蝶 butterfly’ is a pun on ‘dié 耋 octogenarian’, indicating ‘a ripe old age’.

Thus the auspicious rebus picture ‘Hundred Butterflies’ (百蝶) symbolises longevity and wishes for a long life in Chinese art.
