Chinese painting and calligraphy exhibition held by Australian Calligraphers Association
The Australian Calligraphers Association (澳大利亚书法家协会) held an opening ceremony for its Chinese calligraphy and painting exhibition on 15 May 2021 at the Princes Art Gallery (王子画廊), Sydney in celebration of its 10th anniversary of establishment. The exhibition has displayed artworks from thirty- five Chinese Australian artists including many who are already reputable in their specialised fields. There are more than one hundred artworks on display, including calligraphy, water colour painting, oil painting and blue-and-white porcelain painting.
Most of the artists have had similar art training in realism or traditional painting in China. They are skilled at depicting familiar objects and themes, and are capable of producing highly expressive artworks. However, when they place themselves in the natural environment and social context of Australia, the subject matter and the nature of the communication inherent in their artworks has inevitably changed. Their typical Chinese artistic expression and their aesthetic form built over the decades have been greatly challenged by a new context.
The exhibited art works have shown different ways in which the Chinese artists respond to the new challenges. In terms of the form of artistic language, whether it be through painting or sculpture, they have demonstrated great diversities, such as realistic figuration- pursuing perfection of form and colour, the expression of varying degrees of abstraction- connection of the internal-world and external-world, as well as the presentation of various attitudes and state of mind, including exploring the impulsive moment of freedom of the heart. It is noteworthy that each artist is constantly refining his/her position in the process of attaining the best self-realisation, in a world that best suits his/her values and artistic ideals.
This exhibition not only provides an opportunity for idea exchanges among participating artists, but also creates a platform from which audience can recognise the quality and diversity of artistic practices of Chinese Australian artists.
The exhibition is open from 15 May 2021 to 21 May 2021.
Address:
Princes Art Gallery, 493-495 Princes Highway, Sydenham NSW 2044 Australia
